Pmw: Slow Dialogs

Can anyone explain why Pmw::Dialog and other top-level windows take ages
to appear under Linux whereas the same code comes up with no noticable
delay on WinDoze? (The actual top-level pane appears quickly
under Linux, but there is 1-2 seconds before it's content appears).
The problem is exhibited by running the demos/Dialog.py
Better still, is there a fix?

I'm running:
RedHat 6.0 with extensions
python 1.5.2
Pmw 0.8.4
kde 1.2
