But indeed, is it inevitable to have a specific module for one specific
MP3 player? I have no ideas about MP3, but it's strange that there are
no abstraction layers.

Seriously I'd be interested in crossplatform solutions. Does this FAQ
have an entry for ALSA/OSS? MIDI?
