Were you sending out welcome/confirmation messages?  
Were these users added in the web interface or from the command line?

My first approach would be to look at your MTA logs and see how much 
work that was doing - an MTA at full throttle will hammer your disk, 
memory and potentially bandwidth requirements as well as sucking CPU 
(mostly for moving stuff between disk and memory rather than of 
itself).  If you floored the MTA then the web interface will feel 
pretty horrid too.
