I've usd Idle on earlier Mandriva distros without problems.
Also on Suse and Red Hat

Yep, works there for me too.

Can you try writing a short Tkinter app with a Text widget 
and see if that works? That would help narrow it down to 
see if it is a Tkinter problem?
