[Borgbackup] PULL+SSHFS: Avoid CHROOT with --numeric-owner?

Hi all,

one example in the docs uses SSHFS to make the client to be backed up
available to some server and CHROOT because of UID/GID mapping. I'm
aware already of INODE-related problems, but though would like to
understand that setup.

https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/deployment/pull-backup.html?highlight=pull#creating-a-backup

The point is that the whole paragraph reads like its absolutely
necessary to do the CHROOT-stuff, while I'm not sure if I really need
names of users and groups at all. RSYNC only stored IDs in the past as
well and looking at your data structures, you seem to be able to store
IDs. Though, it's not clear to me if IDs only can be stored as well or
names are always needed. The docs don't say those fields are optional
or alike:

> user
> group
> uid
> gid

https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/internals/data-structures.html#items

OTOH, I've found the argument "--numeric-owner" to "borg create",
which exactly seems to imply that user and group names are optional.

> --numeric-owner only store numeric user and group identifiers

https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/usage/create.html

So, is the CHROOT-stuff really only needed for that mapping or is it
serving an additional purpose I simply didn't understand yet? In the
first case, can CHROOT be skipped entirely by simply creating backups
using "borg create --numeric-owner [...]"? Things sound easier to
setup when not needing to care about CHROOT.

Thanks!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
