FYI

The work we've started in PEP 376 and PEP 386 (and some elements not
formalized in PEPs) is trying
to improve the situation.

Distutils provides one part of what would be a full packaging system,
and this work tries to fill
the gap:

- uninstall feature
- version comparison
- extension of metadata (to include dependencies)

The plan is to finish this work and provide a basis to build a package manager.
(which could be used by the stdlib as well if the packages and modules
in there were at the same level
than third party packages)

Regards
Tarek
