It really is a bad idea to write into software directories of any  
sort.  They should be able to be write protected for security.

/tmp is also to be preferred to $HOME because on most UNIX systems  
including MacOS X, it is cleaned out an each reboot.  If you use  
$HOME you end up with a mass of old temporary files - the standard  
Windows curse.

Apple seem to have adopted a convention of using /tmp/UID.  I think  
the idea is that these are cleaned when the user logs out.  So a full  
restart is not needed to clean out junk.
