I can't comment quantitatively about comparative performance (though I'd be
happy to post pybench and pystone numbers when I have a few moments), but
I'm convinced the convenience of a laptop overshadows performance issues in
most situations.  My Powerbook (15", 800MHz) is "fast enough".  I use it in
preference to the 2.something GHz P4 Windows box my current employer
provided for me.  For me, the convenience of being able to take my computing
environment just about anywhere seals the deal.  (At times I'm sure my wife
would wish it had come with a large, permanently attached boat anchor,
however. ;-)
