Python packages on OS X vs Windows

If the amount of time it saved me justified it, I wouldn't hesitate  
to spend
250 pounds. To put it in a more measurable manner, I've found myself
spending so much time attempting to get packages compiled under
UNIXes (OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) that I would have no difficulty
whatsoever in spending $500/year (or more) simply to get libraries
and programs in a precompiled format that I could just install and have
work--even if, in theory, I could get all that stuff "for free" by  
doing a full
install myself.

I'd hoped that most of this stuff would appear in precompiled format
for OS X, but unfortunately it hasn't.
