read/enter text based on cursor position

I'm curious as to why you don't use a combination of static text 
elements and text entry widgets.  From what I've been able to see with 
virtually every app I've ever used, read source code of, or otherwise, 
that is what most people do.  Is there some architectural limitation 
where you cannot use them?
