help with mouse problems

Hello,

I'm having trouble reading mouse events in a console.  Here's my
troubleshooting so far:

1) my python script successfully reads mouse clicks in a terminal window
under x (so I know the script works)

2) I can run bs (the battleship example in the ncurses distro) in a
console, so I think I know that ncurses is installed with gpm support, and
that gpm is configured correctly

3) my script does not read mouse clicks in a console, hence my frustration.

Any suggestions?
