You have an ISA sound card, by any chance? It wouldn't recognise my
old ISA SB AWE 64 either. After installing the "sndconfig" package
myself and using the "sndconfig" tool, I got it to work.

Mdk 9.1 had no problem recognising my PCI / onboard sound chip.
