Hi there,
A bit off topic perhaps, but it seems to fit in the "any GUI/IDE/Form
builder for Python?" category :-)
In my spare time I write and maintain administrative software for a
local charity. The present applications are a rather rough mix of VB,
Python/QT and Java/Swing apps with a PostgreSQL backend. This year we'll
replace them by a new application for which I've just finished
prototyping the object model in Python 2.2.2. We decided to standardize
on Python because we're migrating to Linux (no VB) and Python proved to
be the easiest to maintain.
But creating a rather complex GUI-app under Python with Open Source
tools used to be far more complex then with VB or Java (JBuilder,
Netbeans or Eclipse; doesn't really matter). And earlier experiences
with Tkinter (klunky, ugly, no form builder), wxPython (no stable form
builder, no Ptyhon specific documentation) and Qt (no python docs and
lots of trouble to get it working on several Linux distributions) didn't
exectly make me look forward to the process.
However, today I got the latest build of Boa Constructor from CVS (v
0.1.5). It's awesome to see how much progress Riaan Booysen and his team
have made. It seems to be feature complete, easy to use, it's fast and
I got an app up and running in no time. In other words, heaven send.
This could be the environment which makes Python as easy to use as VB or
Delphi for GUI apps.
But of course, this enthousiasm is based upon one day of playing. Can
anyone who used Boa Constructor recently to build a more avanced app
confirm that Boa is stable enough for "production use"?
Regards,
Iwan
