It's not tabs per se that are the problem, but the legacy of tab-width 
being expressed as N-spaces, and more specifically 8-spaces. If tabs had 
*always* been configurable, the problem wold not exist, as it would have 
prevented the evil habit of *mixing* tabs and spaces to begin with...
