http://kinterbasdb.sourceforge.net/ does appear to be the right thing.
"A Python Extension Package for the Interbase®/Firebird Relational Database"

That's as official as you're going to get I think.  It is, after all,
mentioned on http://www.python.org/topics/database/modules.html .
