First, try if this also happens if you do the SMTP dialogue using
telnet.

telnet mailszrz.zrz.tu-berlin.de 25
HELO meinhostname.meinedomain.de
MAIL FROM: soundso at tu-berlin.de
RCPT TO: blabla at tu-berlin.de
DATA
Dies ist ein Test
