Excel sheet, can Python read them in Linux?

[Raaijmakers, Vincent (IndSys, GE Interlogix)]

I've been asked to write a script in python that reads data from a Excel sheet in Linux.
XML files are not an option, I tried to convince my customer.... believe me...he really wants to use .xls files.
 
Has someone experience? I even don't know if it is possible?!
