This would update the entire distribution to woody the next time a
"apt-get update; apt-get upgrade" is issued. This may not be the
desired effect.

Indeed, building Python yourself has great benefit. One argument for
using Debian packages, however, is that you can access lots of useful
packaged Python libraries that have already been debianized:
