A scientist too does not much to save the world. In front of me is
sitting a scientist which is really talented (a lot of publications in
peer reviewed journals), but if you ask him what he thinks about
science, he will tell you: "It is a great waste of time and money". In
German language we would call this dispute "Wissenschaftsgläubigkeit" or
not.
I would say programming is like an engineering discipline and therefore
as much important as science. But often I get the feeling that people
believe that programming alone does solve problems (that is the reason
why I often say that I am not interested in in programming, but the
reality just is: I am programming all the time).
