Free Z39.50 client library?

Is anyone working on a free (as in speech) Z39.50 client library in
Python, pure or C-library wrapper?  I realise there is a non-free
package (wxPresso: see http://www.bsn.com/)  out there, as somebody
pointed out here a few months back.
