   Close the list so only a subscriber can write to it. Yes, I know there
is mail<=>news gateway, but close list at least will resists mailed spam.

   Install at least minimal spam filter. www.spambouncer.org does a great
job for me.

   Teach people to fight spam, not only filter it out. spam.abuse.net,
www.spamcop.net, etc.
