newbie question: table-like data

I'm new to Python (and to programming) -- working my way through
_Learning Python_ at the moment.

As an exercise, I want to write a program that will help me keep track
of recipes I like (including ingredients), plan menus over an arbitrary
period, and print the appropriate shopping list.

Question: is there a customary way to create, manipulate &
query database tables in Python? Is there a module that does this?
