I think people operated on herd mentality, keyed into the collective
unconscious.  Working at grocery stores in high school and college I saw
something similar.  You always see the same rate of people entering a store,
but they never check out at the same rate.  The front end will be dead for
one minute and instantly there will be a huge line of people at each
register and then it dies down for awhile again.  One of the mysteries of
the universe.
