Maybe your school didn't prepare its students for a future in Europe...?-)

Yep, Finland is in the European Union, and Nokia is one of the largest
European firms in the fields of informatics and communications, so its
Europeanness is rather relevant to people interested in computers,
networking, telecom &c.

This in no way detracts from your argument about the importance of
English, of course.
