this is by no means a "drop in" solution, but I did a google search for
'barcode python', and one of the links it turned up is:

http://www.ddj.com/ftp/1994/1994.07/barcode.zip/

I took a quick look, and it appears to accomplish what you are asking for in
C++, and is short enough that you could convert the C into python.
