I just received an advance copy of Martin C. Lawrence's "Python the
Annotated Archives."  (He uses one of my scripts - page 42.)  Martin
also did "Perl the Annotated Archives" and "Perl: The Complete
Reference" for Osborne.  While I haven't studied each section yet,
it looks like a nice way to teach the subject.  Sort of builds on
the idea of looking for a script that does what you want by going
further and explaining the program step by step.

Not sure when it will be in stores.
