re different between US and German versions of NT

sre uses the C isalnum() function/macro at one point; isalnum() is
locale-aware, so presumably it's matching more characters on the
German version.  This could be argued to be a bug, or a feature.  I'm
not sure which it is, but would lean toward "bug", personally.
