simple IRC client

Has anyone implemented a simple IRC client suitable for a one on one
connection to my brother in Australia? His suggestion was from ChatSpace
and at 2.6Mb+netscape it's not really that easy to use. 

I have something called IRCaman in Tcl, but it's a bit flaky and less
than easy to set up as a script like chat_to_tim.py which is what I
would like.

I'm not a fan of chat as I have to pay the telephone bill and it's not
cheap here.
