statistics about newsgroup items

Hello,
I'd like to write a program that gets statistics concerning how many
times a given news-item has been accessed or how many news items on
average does a user read in a certain news group every time he/she
connects to it, etc
I've looked at the nntp protocol and the nntplib python library but I
can't see how this can be done.
Is it possible to write such a program using nntplib , or maybe using
something else?
