Help creating new user Please

Dear all

My problem is I am trying to add a new user through Python[using bog
standard adduser.] I can create a user
without any problem but when I give a command line option of '-p
passwordstr' to it, and later try to login
with that name and password it refuses saying incorrect password. I
heard that you have to give an encrypted
password on the command line. Is it true? If so how can I create a user
with particalar password through a
script.

Any ideas and help is much appreciated.
