There is nothing wrong with requesting it; what stopped it for the
last years that nobody was capable of implementing it correctly.
Now, in Python 2.3, the feature is implemented.

Why not what? Why not offer it as an option? It is an option in 2.3.
Why not activate the option by default? Because most people won't need
it, and because, if activated by default, it will cause problems to
more people than people actually needing the feature.
