Yeah, it was basically noiser in there than you'd want, but I just can't
think of anywhere else to go. I have tried in the past to help organise
events at bars/pubs etc, and it was the same set of problems. To get someone
where they will treat your properly (i.e. listen to your requests regarding
noise levels, not stuff you round by changing bookings etc) you basically
need to pay. Otherwise, it's luck of the draw. Maybe we'll find somewhere
better for a while, but in my experience it's always a running battle to get
somewhere really good.
The alternatives are venues like workplaces, schools, universities etc,
which basically need someone with local knowledge to organise. My workplace
isn't really appropriate. Also, it means that there are no beers, snacks etc
and everything has to be BYO which can be a pain.

I'm in full agreement about the shortcomings of pubs generally (robot Sushi
included) but short on better ideas.

I have one possible place but I've forgotten the name. I'll try to look into
it next week...
