The upgrade process may be different for you, as it appears that you

For the most part, you shouldn't need to do anything with them.  You 
probably want to take a look at them and see what they are before you 
throw them away, however.

You can't use the standard upgrade process to go from the packaged 
version of Mailman from someone else to our standard version.  If you 
want to stick with the packaged version, you should get the latest 
version of the package from the appropriate OS vendor facilities, and 
use their support mechanism for any questions you may have about 
their version of Mailman.

If you want to use our standard tarball, that will mean a completely 
separate and distinct installation.  Our upgrade process doesn't know 
anything about the configuration files and locations of data from the 
packaged version, so you would need to manually copy over everything 
you wanted to keep.

If you've never installed our software from our standard version of 
the tarball, then this process is likely to be more work than you're 
used to.

You're going to need to decide whether or not you're going to stick 
with the packaged version of Mailman as available from your OS 
provider (and if so, then you need to use their support facilities 
for any questions you might have), or if you're going to use our 
standard version as available from our download page.
