What sort of digests?  Text, MIME, other?

If MIME there are a variety of tools to burst the component
message/rfc822 parts (start with mtools).  If text digests I'd look to
the support tools for things like VM and GNUs.  I'm pretty sure I saw
something there to burst 1153 digests.
