[Mailman-Users] Allowing subscription without web interface?

Is there a way to allow users to request subscription to a list by
issuing a 'subscribe' request via email?  The reason I'm asking, is I'm
working on an intranet projects and I want to have it automatically send
a subscribe request whenever a new user is added into the intranet db.
It'd be really simple if it were anything like majordomo's subscribe
request.
