[Mailman-Users] Subscribing users *with* password...

Mike - IIRC you can send an email to request-listname at listhost.com with the line
subscribe address="user at host.com" password="userpasswd" and they'll be subscribed.

Send a message with the word 'help' in the body to request-listname at listhost.com and
you'll get back some basic email instructions for the list. That's where I saw the
syntax above.
