Paul Hebble, a student of mine at NCSA for a while, submitted patches to the
mailman-developers list in 1999 that used regular .htaccess authentication
over the builtin Mailman authentication.  I don't think it ever made 
its way into the CVS tree.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the patch.  You may be able to
find a copy in the archives.
