do you have cofigure mailman with --mail-gid nogroup --cgi-gid www-data?
what do you have into /var/log/smail/logfile about this request?

modify /etc/smail/directors with:
# mailman aliases - search for alias expansions stored in a database
mailman:
        driver=aliasfile,
        -nobody,
        sender_okay,
        owner=postmaster;
        file=/home/mailman/aliases,
        owngroups=mailman,
        modemask=002,
        proto=lsearch,
