I'm using it as an international word. I don't think there is an
English word for that phenomenon ("garbage" is not really equivalent,
in my understanding) - for that matter, there isn't a German word for
it, either. It happened that the Japanese apparently are confronted
with garbage characters so often that they created a new word, and I
happily accept it as a terminus technicus :-)
