Totally agree.  OTOH, don't most MTAs provide /some/ way to call
external programs on messages at various points in their workflow?  If
so, then by providing richer and more unified Python APIs inside
Mailman, we can at least allow for developers to write extension
modules for their MTAs that more tightly couple Mailman and the MTA,
without having to perform major surgery on Mailman or duplicate lots of
code.

That's really the direction I'm heading in -- make Mailman more like a
(Python) library that can be used to write custom "applications".  Those
applications wouldn't need to reach into our dbs directly because they
ought to be able to get most answers to a question fairly directly.
