Authentication data in the sense of identification (you know the UID
and the password) is the simplest problem, and is probably so small
as to be ignorable.  The problem is not just UID/PW combos, but
access rights, settings, configurations, meta data, etc.

True.  As happens I'm more tempted by LDAP.
