Exactly correct. The data can be merged in from some external source, such as
a database, or a nice user list appended with additional information in some
way.

Listserv implements this, but it's very expensive (£20k ~= $36k), and doesn't
work on Solaris or Linux.

I'd agree that it's not part of a mailmanagers /core/ functionality, but it's
functionality that'd be useful for announcement/newsletter type mailing lists
(which I suspect constitute a fair proportion of mailmans user base) and for
supporting large user bases (such as ours).
