With the 0.1(b) releases, you shouldn't have to.

However, if you placed the Python includes and binaries somewhere else
than /usr/local, you probably have to hack a little in Makefile and
Setup.

(I have to admit that I don't know much about the Makefile.pre.in
specifics, really, since it was contributed by others as being the
standard way to organize extensions)
