I'll put my $0.02 (CAD) into the fray.  I've tried to get at Blender 
quickly, a couple of times, and failed to find a handle to start with.  
I've used some 3D packages before, Infini-D and VPython are two ends of 
the spectrum, but I found each of them easy to sit down with and just 
*use*.  If anyone has tips for how to start with Blender, it seems like 
there's a good audience for it here.
