Or Ivan Lanningham's "24 hour" book

Or a Manning Publications beginners book on Perl. I've forgotten 
the name but its the closest published book that I've seen to 
mine in that it explains the concepts pretty well.

I just have serious doubts about the suitability of Perl as 
a first language...
