[TriPython] TriPython May 2019 Meeting: Data Science: From Model to Microservice

Calloway, Chris cbc at unc.edu
Wed May 8 16:13:31 EDT 2019

Please welcome our next speaker, Brenton Mallen, at out next monthly feature speaker meeting at WebAssign in Raleigh.

http://tripython.org/Members/sgambino/may-19-mtg
https://www.meetup.com/tripython/events/261296108

When: Thursday, May 23, 7pm

Where: WebAssign, NCSU Centennial Campus, 1791 Varsity Drive, Suite 200, Raleigh

What: This will be a walkthrough of building machine learning model and an associated microservice to execute the model and return its output. The model will be accessible both as a web app as well as a RESTful API. It will be using Python (Flask (http://flask.pocoo.org/) and Zappa (http://www.zappa.io/) frameworks) along with the AWS serverless architecture (Lambda (http://aws.amazon.com/lambda/) and API Gateway (http://aws.amazon.com/api-gateway/)). The example case will be the classic Kaggle problem of determining if someone would have survived the Titanic (http://www.kaggle.com/c/titanic/data).

Our speaker, Brenton Mallen (http://github.com/brentonmallen1), is an Ocean Engineer turned Data Scientist. He has spent three and a half years performing in-depth research and building both real-time and batch machine learning systems in the internet bot mitigation space. He is currently a data scientist in the agriculture industry processing satellite images for crop analysis.

Extemporaneous "lightning talks" of 5-10 minute duration are also welcome and don't need to be pre-announced. Plenty of free after-hours parking is available in the upper level of the deck behind WebAssign (turn through the median just before the intersection of Varsity and Main Campus Drives). If the door is locked, call the number posted on the door. An after-meeting location for food and beverage will be decided at the meeting (usually BaDa Wings at Mission Valley). Come join us for a fun and informative evening.
