PM at WebAssign Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2014 22:40:37 -0500 From: Matthew Frazier To: Hello, LUGgers! FOSS Fair was fun! But, because we spent all our time preparing for that, I don't really have time to organize a proper LUG meeting for this Tuesday. (We've already used our "cop-out" meeting topic for this semester.) Fortunately, another great local group, TriPython, is having a Python Project Night we can crash. In the words of Chris Calloway, TriPython's organizer: "Have a project you want to show off, share, seek help with, or just get some work done surrounded by like minded Python lovers? Join us for our monthly project night and do just that! Don't have something to work on? Just need some help with Python? Show up and enjoy the energy, sprint on an open source project, find something interesting to contribute to or be inspired by! The setting is informal and there is no schedule, so don't worry if you show up past the start time. Whether you are a Python newbie needing help or have an open source project you want to share, come hang out and hack." When: Tuesday, March 4th, 6 PM - unknown end time Where: WebAssign: 1791 Varsity Drive, Suite 200, on Centennial Campus I know a lot of LUGgers work with or are interested in learning Python, so this will be a good opportunity to network with area Pythonistas -- TriPython is always enthusiastic about helping people learn the language and get involved in the community. We hope to see you there! -- Thanks, Matthew Frazier President, LUG @ NC State http://lug.ncsu.edu/ From cbc at unc.edu Fri Mar 21 19:09:55 2014 From: cbc at unc.edu (Chris Calloway) Date: Fri, 21 Mar 2014 14:09:55 -0400 Subject: [TriZPUG] PyCon Ticket Message-ID: <532C8073.1050306@unc.edu> I'm looking for a PyCon ticket. I have been with Caktus for *most* of its existence and certainly got to see it grow at an amazing pace. As the article says, we won't be ready to move until the end of the year. We have plenty of time to enjoy our existing Carrboro location, the fantastic atmosphere and lunch options of the Carrboro summer, and ongoing project nights and quarterly TriPython hosting. However... I'd like to start the search now for a replacement Carrboro/Chapel Hill location to host every third month in our place, after we finally move to Durham. I don't want to create a vacuum, so please if anyone knows a possible new location that could pick up in 2015, speak up. Well, I have had a very recent serendipitous development just in the last couple of days. I thought Monday was going to be my last day at UNC. After ten years of good luck with soft funding, the government's create jobs by eliminating jobs program called the sequester had finally caught up to me and robbed me of all my funding from all sources all at once. And my brightest job prospect was in Nags Head. I was kind of planning on moving to the beach in a few months, which has been my lifelong dream. But as of Monday I will instead be a Marine Sciences employee on loan to RENCI, UNC's supercomputing center (http://www.renci.org/). They are starting to get more serious about Python, finally. They've been doing bits and pieces with it here and there. But now they've seen the bright shining light and want a lot more. They called up my boss and bada-bing, I suddenly had to cancel my plans on how to spend my severance pay sprinting in Italy (http://abstract-technology.com/plog-event-plone-italy). The thing about RENCI is, really nice meeting rooms. And a desire to be seen doing community outreach. However, I have to keep a watch on this. There is still a possibility that I may become a Marine Sciences employee on loan to RENCI in Nags Head because of a possibly advantageous three-way funding model with the Coastal Studies Institute which would require my work on CSI premises at the coast. I just won't know for sure until a few more months go by. There are too many moving pieces in play at the moment to predict. But for right now if nothing changes, I think we could start meeting at RENCI soon. My involvement with this group is one of the reasons I'm being hired, so I plan to bring it up at my first meeting with them on Monday. I'm also really looking forward to project night in Durham. :) -- Sincerely, Chris Calloway http://nccoos.org/Members/cbc office: 3313 Venable Hall phone: (919) 599-3530 mail: Campus Box #3300, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 From lionface.lemonface at gmail.com Wed Mar 26 21:20:58 2014 From: lionface.lemonface at gmail.com (Josh Johnson) Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2014 16:20:58 -0400 Subject: [TriZPUG] Caktus Moving To Durham In-Reply-To: <53332F36.2090307@unc.edu> References: <53332F36.2090307@unc.edu> Message-ID: This is all tremendous news! It's a relief to hear that there is (hopefully!) a good potential home for the quarterly Chapel Hill meeting in the future. I did want to add that Caktus would not be what it is today without the presence and support of the Python community throughout the Triangle, and this seems like a good time to say "thank you!" While there are certainly more space options in Durham, come the end of the year, we're looking forward to continuing to support the group in whatever ways we can from our new home. We have a space specifically scoped out on the first floor for trainings, meet ups, and project nights, and I for one can't wait to see it put to use. Welcome to the RENCI team! Are you working for Brian Blanton? How'd ya guess. :) Yeah, Blanton and Luettich and things ADCIRC. I had worked alongside Brian already when he was a research professor in my department many years ago. But I think the idea is to have me branch out in the organization wherever Python is needed. They mentioned having me work on an iRODS project. -- Sincerely, Chris Calloway http://nccoos.org/Members/cbc office: 3313 Venable Hall phone: (919) 599-3530 mail: Campus Box #3300, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 From cbc at unc.edu Fri Mar 28 07:46:25 2014 From: cbc at unc.edu (Chris Calloway) Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2014 02:46:25 -0400 Subject: [TriZPUG] Caktus Moving To Durham In-Reply-To: References: <53332F36.2090307@unc.edu> <5333466B.50709@unc.edu> <65CA5FA9-9E8A-4C24-B424-3EAC1B021D37@gmail.com> Message-ID: <53351AC1.1040507@unc.edu> On 3/27/2014 7:11 AM, Tobias McNulty wrote: > I did want to add that Caktus would not be what it is today without the > presence and support of the Python community throughout the Triangle, Certainly TriPython would not be what it is today without the support and participation of Caktus over the last several years. It was always a pleasure to meet at Caktus for general meetings and project nights. Thank you very much for all the good times and camaraderie. -- Sincerely, Chris Calloway http://nccoos.org/Members/cbc office: 3313 Venable Hall phone: (919) 599-3530 mail: Campus Box #3300, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 From cbc at unc.edu Fri Mar 28 18:59:17 2014 From: cbc at unc.edu (Chris Calloway) Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2014 13:59:17 -0400 Subject: [TriZPUG] Alert Message-ID: <5335B875.5000705@unc.edu> We had a great time at Satisfactions. But I must alert you to a situation I experienced there last night. I made a single item charge to my debit card there that went through fine. Then a couple of hours later I used the same card for a two item charge. It was denied. This puzzled me as there were way more than sufficient funds available but I just gave them another card and chalked it up to my overzealous bank. After Satisfactions I went to Kinkos to get some shipping supplies and my debit card was denied again. I went back out to my truck and checked my online banking and found that Satisfactions had run my second ticket through four times and the charges had gone through. Not only that, but I was also charged for a third ticket that was not an amount that was on either of my other two that I did offer the card for. I went to my bank morning and they backed out the repeated transactions for my second ticket but told me I should contact Satisfactions myself to dispute the third charge and get them to refund the charge. They said this would be easier and faster than going through a fraud claim with the bank. So maybe check your credit card statements from last night. -- Sincerely, Chris Calloway http://nccoos.org/Members/cbc office: 3313 Venable Hall phone: (919) 599-3530 mail: Campus Box #3300, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 From francois.dion at gmail.com Fri Mar 28 22:56:54 2014 From: francois.dion at gmail.com (Francois Dion) Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2014 17:56:54 -0400 Subject: [TriZPUG] Yesterday's presentation Message-ID: Here's the slide show (outline) I used yesterday: https://bitbucket.org/fdion/brython-prez The main brython mailing list is at: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!forum/brython But feel free to ask questions here too.
