PyTexas 2012 is next weekend, so if you have not yet registered,
please think about doing so. I believe we have reach critical mass of
attendees and presentations to make it a worthwhile regional
conference.

So far, I see 117 registrations for PyTexas, or which about 15 have
not been paid yet. So, we have just over 100 confirmed registrations.
This is lower than last year at the same time; we had around 300
registrations last year, and only about 150 showed up. So we need
about 50 more paid registrations to catch up to last year's
attendance.

We have a few people looking for carpools from Austin/DFW/Houston. If you

We are going to have catered, boxed lunches both days at the conference.
Saturday will be a local restaurant, Stover Bros Cafe, and Jason's Deli on
Sunday.

Thanks for putting that together, Ben. We all appreciate the hard work
you've put into PyTexas, and it's nice to see the schedule taking
form.

Since there are only two tracks this time, we are probably going to
have some time slots which will not appeal to everyone. To address
that, I would suggest emphasizing the open space rooms for BoF
meetings and such. You have mentioned there will be plenty of rooms
available; we could set up an open space schedule board (or just a
very large poster on the wall) with a hand-drawn schedule grid. The
idea is that people wanting to host an open space session could attach
sticky notes to the grid denoting a time and location.

The PyCon website lists some open space meetings which seem to
perenially pop up at PyCon:

I have found it's easy to get rolls of large paper and tape them to
the wall using gaffer's tape, but am not sure that will be allowed in
this space. We might need some large posterboards. What do you think,

I just verified with the MSC Staff that Parking Lots #48 and #62 will be available for free parking this weekend. They are located at the south west and south east sides of Kyle Field (http://aggiemap.tamu.edu/?Bldg=0367). These lots are free to the public so they may be full later in the day.

The below Google map link was created from an iPhone while standing at the entrance to the garage, so it should get you to the exact location.

The parking garage is free on the weekend so it fills up quickly...best to get there early if you want to park there.

A bit of a miscommunication, the surface, uncovered lots are free. Parking

The PyCon organizers are happy to announce that ticket sales for the March 2013 conference have opened at https://us.pycon.org/2013/registration/ ! Early bird rates are available for the first 1000 purchases, which is a departure from previous time-based systems. With PyCon 2012 having been a quick sell out, we're expecting this one to be the same. Keep in mind that attendance is strictly limited to 2500.

PyCon 2013 is going back to Santa Clara, CA before heading up north for two years in Montreal, Quebec for 2014-15. The event starts with two days of tutorials on March 13, followed by three days of talks starting March 15, and ends with four days of sprints starting March 18.

Individual and corporate ticket prices remain the same as they have been for the last few years, with early bird rates of $300 and $450 respectively. The regular rates of $350 and $600 for individual and corporate are still an incredible deal.

For 2013 we've reduced the cost to students by 50%, bringing the early bird rate to $100 with a regular rate of $125. Providing a more affordable conference experience for students is a priority for the organizers and the Python Software Foundation, and we're hoping the decrease helps bring more of them out.

Would you like to organize  PyTexas 2013 in your city? If so, please
contact me and let me know about your interest. We will need a bid to
contain documentation about a viable venue location, as well as
information on who will act as venue coordinator, a list of features
and amenities, capacity (plan for 100 - 300), costs and requirements
to utilize the facility, and risks of losing the venue to a higher
priority event.

PyTexas 2012 took place last weekend at the Texas A&M Memorial Student
Center, which was a significant upgrade over previous facilities
hosting PyTexas. The rooms had excellent acoustics, and were sizeable
enough to allow significant growth. The main two rooms had a
retractable divider, which allowed dual podiums useful for alternating
lightning talks at each podium. The open space rooms were also great
and featured high quality projectors. The facility also had a lot of
great amenities, including retail stores, art galleries, and a food
court.

This upgraded facility came with reasonable cost, which required that
we charge a moderate registration fee ($25 early bird/$50 starting
Sept 1) in order to rent the facility and provide breakfast + lunch.
This may have hurt our registration numbers, which were only a little
over 100 paid attendees. However, I suspect that we could have had
much greater registration if more effort had been put into publicity,
along with a stronger program and earlier information about the
conference features (presentations were very "last minute", for
example).

We have the option of using the same venue next year, and that is our
default choice given that it's a known solid option with very low
risk. However we would like to introduce a process for bidding on the
next venue. By "we", I mean the PyTexas volunteer organizers, which is
a sort of "committee of the willing." The current group of organizers
met on Sunday evening after the conference to discuss roles for next
year, and decided that this year we need to make the venue decision
much earlier in the process.  In order to secure availability of the
TAMU MSC, we need the decision to be made by Dec 1.

If you wish to join the decision making process, you will need to
volunteer for a significant role in helping to organize PyTexas.

volunteer positions such as program chair and sponsor coordinator.
