It does record the character set used in both the subject and body of the email though, so it can take that into account as one of the clues upon which it relies to decide if a message is ham or spam. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From n0208 at square-sun.net Sat Mar 1 09:47:28 2008 From: n0208 at square-sun.net (Nick Iredale) Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2008 08:47:28 +0000 Subject: [Spambayes] Problem with POP3 Proxy: Fatal error, run database recovery Message-ID: <1026208640.20080301084728@square-sun.net> I am using SpamBayes POP3 Proxy Version 1.0.4 (March 2005) (binary), with version 2.3.5 (#62, Feb 8 2005, 16:23:02) [MSC v.1200 32 bit (Intel)] of Python; my operating system is Windows 5.1.2600.2 (Service Pack 2). Yes, SpamBayes is free anti-spam software that you install on your computer. It appears that you use Outlook Express. If you download the latest version from here: http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ the installer should guide you through the steps necessary to setup the SpamBayes POP3 proxy for use with Outlook Express. If you're interested in a more full-featured, but still free, mail program you might check out Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ Thunderbird works fairly hard at being a free Outlook replacement. If you make that switch you can choose to use the Thunderbayes extension: http://pieces.openpolitics.com/thunderbayes/ which integrates the SpamBayes functionality into the Thunderbird user interface more tightly than it will be with Outlook Express. You'll have a better mail program to boot. Just a thought. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From assdimvol at hotmail.com Mon Mar 3 04:40:49 2008 From: assdimvol at hotmail.com (Stacia Harrold) Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2008 22:40:49 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] =?windows-1251?q?online_survey_job_openings?= Message-ID: <00000004378C9022099100433> Hi, Since the start of 2008 our organization starts recruiting home workers willing to take part in well-paying research studies conducted by leading online businesses. You *might* be able to use the SpamBayes IMAP filter to classify messages, though as far as I know this hasn't been tried before. I have a freebie Yahoo! Mail account but it doesn't support IMAP. I was able to get the IMAP filter to work with Google, sort of, but I was unsatisfied with the results. It was too complicated, it wasn't at all clear to me that I had things set up properly (and I'm a SpamBayes developer), and it seemed as if Google's spam filtering and SpamBayes were often at cross purposes. My mother-in-law has a similar setup to you, but since she only mails her friends she doesn't get much (if any) spam. Still, perhaps I can prevail on her to let me try and break her mail setup (she's done it frequently enough without my help, and she always calls me for tech support ;-). It's not going to happen anytime soon though. PyCon is coming . That will likely suck up most otherwise free time for the next week or so. I know that many, if not all, of Dale> the att yahoo's have a pop3 option for email. Yes, POP3 is definitely an option, though I think that will require Anne to learn to use a different mail program. She's currently using Firefox as her mail reader (reading through-the-web), so the mail always resides on Yahoo's machines. That suggested to me that IMAP would be the best way to tackle the problem, of course assuming Yahoo! supports it. (They don't, unfortunately.) Anne, Would you will willing to take the plunge and switch to Outlook Express or some other mail reader? If so, the SpamBayes POP3 proxy should work for you and greatly simplify the spam handling side of your life. Based on the mail you sent me, you're about the same age as my mother-in-law and indicated you're an Internet novice. Despite lengthy communication with the Thunderbayes author, I've been unable to get it to work. He suggested using the SSL program Stunnel, though he hasn't used it himself. I have my system configured as follows: TBird Server Name: localhost Port: 8110 Secure connection: Never Use secure authorization: No Thunderbayes Remote Servers: localhost:8111 SpamBayes Ports: 1110 Stunnel [pop3s] accept = localhost:8111 connect = mail.comcast.net:995 However, when I try to get mail, TBird says at the bottom of the screen "Connected to localhost...", but nothing happens for about 30 sec until the connection times out. Can anyone tell what changes I should make, or if there's an alternative to Stunnel (which is not particularly user-friendly). Since Thunderbayes works fine if I don't use SSL, I'd be tempted not to use it except (I think) I'd be compromising security. Is that right? If you can't get that to work, nothing you can do via Thunderbird, SpamBayes or Thunderbayes will help. If you can get that to work, what about Thunderbird without either SpamBayes or Thunderbayes? If you can get that to work, then how about the SpamBayes POP3 proxy with Thunderbird? If *that* works, then try Thunderbird with the Thunderbayes extension. We are using SpamBayes to filter messages coming in to a mailbox. It misses some messages with errors like what's below. When this happens we can go in and click "Filter Messages" and it runs no problem. What I would like to be able to do is to have an hourly batch-job that runs that same process for me. I don't see anything in the file system that would allow me to run a command-line call that executes "Filter Messages". Can anybody help? We run Microsoft exchange sever. I leave my computer at my desk at work on 24/7 with outlook running but minimized. Spambayes was always filtering messages I upgraded to a computer running Windows XP and outlook 2003 and now Spambayes stops filtering and I have to start it again by going to the filter menu and click on start filtering. It seems to stop either when outlook is minimized or when the screensaver activates. This is especially difficult because I check my e-mail from the road and with my old system running it would keep my inbox free of spam just by leaving my computer at the office running with outlook open. Now once I leave the office my inbox fills up with spam and I can't get Spambayes to filter until I get back to the office. Is there a way to get Spambayes to filter all of the time again? Why not try the 1.1 binary installer available in the table at ? If you want to use the source distribution, first install Python (http://www.python.org/), then execute python setup.py install I'm not sure where to go from there if you're using Outlook. WILL THIS WORK FOR "INCREDIMAIL" AND I'M Barb> RUNNING "VISTA HOME PREMIUM" INTERNET EXPLORER 7 Barb, In theory SpamBayes should work with Incredimail as long as you use POP3 to communicate with your mail server, though I'm not sure anyone's ever tried it. (Check your Incredimail configuration to see if it uses POP3 or IMAP to fetch mail.) There is a table of options on the SpamBayes front page (http://www.spambayes.org/). I created a link to the source distribution, but you might try the 1.1a4 test release installer for Outlook. I believe when you run the binary installer it should either automatically detect that you aren't using Outlook (and install the POP3 proxy) or ask you whether you want to install the Outlook plugin or the POP3 proxy. If prompted, choose the POP3 proxy. An alternative might be to switch to Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/) and then install the ThunderBayes extension (http://pieces.openpolitics.com/thunderbayes/). That is also a free email solution but should be easier to get setup. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From web02 at comcast.net Sun Mar 23 19:58:12 2008 From: web02 at comcast.net (WEB02) Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2008 14:58:12 -0400 Subject: [Spambayes] Installation Message-ID: I installed Spambayes on my home Vista system and it seems to be OK. There is another good reason to switch from Incredimail to Thunderbird. In my personal experience, Incredimail is a "bad mail application". It sends out email with a lot of "funny" layout, backgrounds, smileys,... A lot of this "funny" stuff is rendered exactly the same as spam mails. From the point of view of a simple spam filter, Incredimail sends spam. It even gets worse when you write everything in CAPS like Barb does... (Barb, please don't shout. I already have a bit of tinnitus) At the current customer, I'm doing monthly reports on mail, spam and virus stats for an internal IT newsletter. I'm also doing 2nd level email support the last 15 months. That means finding out why and where a certain email gets blocked. It's really playing Sherlock Holmes with mail headers, MTA's, greylisting daemons, MX records, and such. So I really know what I'm talking about when I say that Incredimail is incredibly spammy. -- Amedee From skip at pobox.com Tue Mar 25 13:03:31 2008 From: skip at pobox.com (skip at pobox.com) Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2008 07:03:31 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] download or not? Vista seems more problematic, at least with Outlook (some people report problems, others have none). I haven't seen any reports one way or the other about Citrix, though this list gets periodic queries. (Try a Google search for "spambayes citrix.") SpamBayes may not be a great fit for your project. It's a community project, so the developers maintain it when, as, and if they have interest, time, and resources. I doubt anyone has a Citrix environment to test in. Support is available primarily through this list, where other subscribers may or may not respond to any given message, depending on their availability and whether they have anything useful to say. If you need definitive answers, or enterprise-level support in general, this is not the place to find it. There may be third parties that offer such support. On the other hand, you could contribute to the project by testing SpamBayes on Citrix and posting your results to the list. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Manav Mehra Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 2:13 PM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] SpamBayes Hi I am working on a project for Citigroup and would like the following information about you're software SpamBayes:- Is the software compatible with Windoes Vista, XP, Citirix If so, what is the version that is compatible If not, when is the approximate release date for a compatible verion Will it be supported when running on Windows Vista, XP or Citrix Thanks -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The above email addresses were stumbled upon while roaming the internet. I've been trying to locate the family of a granduncle (William Clabby) who migrated to California sometime after the First World War and before my birth. I did meet him once, as a child, when he visited New York. To help identify this "Will" Clabby, he was on a troop carrying ocean liner which was torpedoed off Scotland. Surviving that incident, he went on to serve with the U.S. Army Air Service. His sister, Elizabeth Clabby, was my grandmother. His parents migrated from Ireland, where his father was a teacher. His father worked as a tailor in New York City. Will, before moving to California, sold automobiles. I have a number of images of Will and his family, as well as postcards sent from France while actively serving in the military. I recognize that discovering the descendant of a granduncle on the internet is a very "long shot." However, it was deemed reasonable to follow this admittedly slim lead. Should you be, or know of, Will's family, please pass along this information. The memorabilia in my possession is digitized and can be transferred to a DVD which I'll be happy to mail. If this message is without basis, please forgive the intrusion.
