From trebor at animeigo.com Fri Feb 1 13:59:17 2008 From: trebor at animeigo.com (Robert Woodhead) Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2008 07:59:17 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] SpamBayes Proxy once again getting slower In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <47A317A5.7040909@animeigo.com> This is a repeat of the problem I was having earlier. After resetting the databases (using Pickle AFAICT) and training on about 200 messages, SpamBayes is lightning fast classifying messages. But over a couple of weeks it gets slower and slower and slower, it's now taking 10+ seconds per email to do its classification - and Python is maxing out at 100% of cpu when doing it. I have set it to not train on incoming email, not cache stuff, etc, to no avail. This is on a Mac, using Thunderbayes proxy. Any suggestions? From millerdev at gmail.com Sat Feb 2 17:34:26 2008 From: millerdev at gmail.com (Daniel Miller) Date: Sat, 02 Feb 2008 11:34:26 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] [ 1819910 ] AttributeError, get_statistics_start_date : FIXED Message-ID: <47A49B92.2090806@gmail.com> Hi, I'd like a little peer review if someone with a bit of knowledge of the spambayes 1.1 internals would have a moment. I'm working with another ThunderBayes user (Chad Nelson) to try to integrate SpamBayes 1.1a4 into ThunderBayes so it supports SSL out of the box. Chad has posted an initial fix for a bug[0] that prevents SpamBayes 1.1a4 from working with ThunderBayes (his handle is chadaaronnelson). Being a bit uncomfortable with Chad's fix because it omitted some resource cleanup in State.close(), I dug in and found the deeper reason for the problem. See my comment on the SF bug page[0] for more details (my SF handle is heres4). Is there any chance that this could be committed and a new release of SpamBayes published (preferrably without the alpha tag)? If it doesn't happen soon I'll be shipping a patched version of SpamBayes with the next release of ThunderBayes. ~ Daniel (original author of ThunderBayes) [0] From mikmcne at hughes.net Sat Feb 2 17:26:24 2008 From: mikmcne at hughes.net (Mike McNEELY) Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2008 11:26:24 -0500 Subject: [Spambayes] Spam Button Disappeared Message-ID: What steps need to be done to get the spam button back on Spambayes. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... In my experience it generally means you have to programs trying to write to the database at the same time. Two copies of the Outlook plugin or two copies of the POP3 proxy or one of them and any other SpamBayes application which writes to the database. It depends. If your mail service allows IMAP access, you should (in theory) be able to use the SpamBayes IMAP filter to classify mail, though nobody's tried that yet as far as I know. I use Gmail via its POP3 interface. When my system downloads mail it classifies the messages locally. It worked perfectly for me when I upgraded from Outlook 2003, and when I had to reinstall my system on a new hard drive it worked perfectly there. But then I had to reinstall the system again, and it hasn't worked since. I had the problem with Outlook crashing, but most of the time I could use the Spam and Not Spam buttons, but no matter what I did, SpamBayes simply would do no filtering on its own. I disabled and reenabled filtering. I trained it manually and on the fly. I uninstalled and reinstalled. It kept track of the training I was doing, but when it came to automatic filtering, it just sat there. For months, actually. I asked the list for help several times but didn't receive a single response. So I finally gave up, which was a shame, because when it worked, it was the best spam-defeating system I'd encountered, certainly better than the badly designed Outlook Junk E-mail Filter I'm using now. I've never mastered installing form source code and so only download compiled code. Jay, Much depends on your environment. It appears you use Yahoo! Mail. Do you use it via the web or via a mail application running on your computer (such as Apple's Mail.app)? To the best of my knowledge nobody has tested SpamBayes with Yahoo! Mail, but if they support IMAP there is hope that we can get it to work. Let us know a bit more about how you read your email. I have a Yahoo! Mail address which I never use. Unfortunately, I also have very little free time. I'll try to fit some time in the next week or so to look at it. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From skip at pobox.com Sat Feb 9 06:55:19 2008 From: skip at pobox.com (skip at pobox.com) Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2008 23:55:19 -0600 Subject: [Spambayes] Initial thoughts - SpamBayes + Gmail w/ IMAP *and* POP3 Message-ID: <18349.16455.369487.578868@montanaro-dyndns-org.local> Okay, so tonight I got the SpamBayes IMAP filter working with Gmail after applying a patch that Dave Abrahams submitted about a year ago. (I've yet to check that in, but will do it tomorrow.) My current setup is Gmail w/ POP3 for download and SpamBayes filtering on my laptop. To this I added the IMAP filter. I haven't done too much with it yet, but it works. After a fashion. I'm not particularly keen on the way the IMAP filter operates, but that's probably just my inexperience with IMAP and the way it forces you to work. I wound up creating two labels, "sbham" and "sbspam". Those appear as folders to the IMAP filter. Any message I wanted it to train on get one of those labels. I have it classify messages in both my INBOX and Spam folders. Unfortunately, I tend to dump my spam periodically via the Gmail interface. Most messages with the sbspam label wind up in my Spam folder. I'll have to get in the habit of not deleting spam tagged with that label so I wind up with something to (re)train on later. Since Gmail has its own spam filter (which you can't disable) I can't help but feeling that the two systems are going to duke it out a bit. We'll see how that works. While I think about it, I also have a Yahoo! Mail address. That tool supports IMAP as well, but you have to upgrade to a "premium" mail service. I imagine it's not all that expensive, but I'll continue to experiment with free mail options for now. I believe one of its installation options is to setup the POP3 proxy, but I don't know if you select which to configure or if it figures it out by poking around on your disk to see what mail program(s) you've installed. I added a link to the source in zip format for Windows users using other mail programs to the table on the SpamBayes home page: http://www.spambayes.org/ You might try the binary installer though. I'd stick with the test release. It's much more current than the stable, now a bit crufty, release. That's a good question. I'm not sure the free version of Yahoo! Mail supports POP3 or IMAP. The non-free version supports at least IMAP. Someone else here mentioned something called YPOPs! which presumably adds POP support to the free version: http://ypopsemail.com/ If that works you should be able to use the SpamBayes POP3 proxy to filter your email. The chain of programs would look something like this: Yahoo! Mail -> YPOPs! -> SB POP3 proxy -> your mail program It appears there is a binary installer for Windows. On other platforms you will have to download the source distribution. The last source distribution looks substantially older than the last Windows distribution though, so checking the code out from the project's CVS repository looks to be the best bet. (Note that you will need to be able to compile C++ code. If you don't know what that means, that's not going to be a good option for you.) I was notified then that the complete deletion coulld not be performed, and that I could remove the remainder manually. I attempted this, but was also refused the means to do that. If you have partial downloads of the software, you should delete them. If you have partial failed installations of the program, please tell us exactly what remains installed, exactly what steps you are taking to try and resolve that, and exactly what error messages you get when you try. A partial install should not prevent you reinstalling though - so maybe you should try rebooting, then following the installation instructions again, and should anything go wrong, record exactly what you were doing, and exactly what any error messages said. We need to know *precisely* what was being attempted and what went wrong to be able to help. Also, please ensure you include information about your operating system (ie, what version of Windows you are running) and what email program you are hoping to use it with. Also, you should have already received an auto-reply from this mailing list pointing you at the FAQ and the troubleshooting guide - they will tell you how to include "log files" which can help us diagnose the issue. SpamBayes works by examining the characteristics of messages that you classify as spam. Initially, you have classified no messages, so it has no information as to what your spam looks like, and it files everything as possible spam. You train SpamBayes by reclassifying any messages that it gets wrong. Typically, that means dragging a message from the junk suspects folder to your inbox or to the junk folder, or selecting the message and using the Spam or Not Spam button ("Recover from Spam" or "Delete as Spam" in v1.04, I think). After you've manually classified enough messages, you'll find that SpamBayes puts almost all messages where they belong. I typically have excellent results once I have trained a few dozen messages. You should continue to reclassify any that it gets wrong, as this will improve future classification. If you're using the Outlook/Exchange junk mail controls, you may want to have SpamBayes filter the Outlook "Junk E-mail" folder as well as your inbox. I'd recommend the current 1.1 alpha if you want to do this, because it can move any good messages from the junk folder to your inbox. 1.04 can't do that, so you have to remember to look in your junk folder for any messages that Outlook thought were junk but SpamBayes classified as ham - not the most intuitive thing to do! Please "reply to all" when responding. This ensures that your responses are retained for the benefit of anyone who searches the list archive in the future. ________________________________ From: Hal Martin [mailto:hal at elliott-ins.com] Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2008 11:09 AM To: Jesse Pelton Subject: RE: [Spambayes] help Can you advise me how to make mail coming in to junk suspects folder to come into the normal in box? This allows SpamBayes to put anything that it is not sure how to classify into the possible spam folder, indicating that it needs your attention. Assuming you've done that, the next thing you need to know is that SpamBayes classifies exclusively on the basis of the training you do. Initially, it has no information regarding what you think is spam and what you regard as good messages (or "ham"), so it treats everything as possible spam. You have to tell it which of those possible spam messages to treat as spam and which to treat as ham. This is what makes SpamBayes work well for a wide range of people: you train it to recognize what YOU think is spam. You're not constrained by someone else's choices. The training may sound onerous, but it really isn't. Training on each message is simple (just drag it where it belongs or click the appropriate button on the toolbar), and SpamBayes learns quickly. I generally get excellent results by the time I've trained on a few dozen messages. Bottom line: initially, you do have to tell the system which messages are good and which are not, but that phase does not last long, and I think the benefits are more than worth the effort. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Lone Ebbesen Sent: Monday, February 18, 2008 9:55 AM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] Uninstalling Hi, Today I installed the spamfilter SpanBayes, but Already I have uninstalled it again, because it sent all my mails into the junkfile directory without any warning, no matter which settings I had made. Open the SpamBayes Manager and look at the general tab, mine lists Junk and Junk Suspects. Then I look at the left hand pane where my inbox is and look for any plus signs. This signifies that there is a subfolder, many times the Junk and Junk Suspects folders are located in the deleted folder. You could try setting up a rule as well, make a test folder, create a rule with a specific subject, then when the message arrives see if it is going into the test folder or if it shows up missing as well. Joseph, Can you give us some details about what you did? I believe the POP3 proxy (sb_server.py) allows you to connect via your web browser to http://localhost:8880/ Can you give us your configuration information from that? Did you change the configuration of Outlook Express to connect to the POP3 proxy? When everything is configured, there will be three programs in the mix: +--------+ +--------+ +--------+ | Your | | POP3 | | Outlook| | Mail | --> | | --> | | | Server | | Proxy | | Express| +--------+ +--------+ +--------+ Suppose your mail server is on a host named mailserver. Typically, it will listen to port 110. The POP3 proxy will be configured to connect to port 110 on mailserver. The POP3 proxy will, in turn, be configured to listen to port 110 on localhost. Outlook Express thus needs to be configured to connect to port 110 on localhost. -- Skip Montanaro - skip at pobox.com - http://www.webfast.com/~skip/ From abell at dtnspeed.net Tue Feb 19 18:44:44 2008 From: abell at dtnspeed.net (Pam Taylor) Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 11:44:44 -0600 Subject: [Spambayes] Compatibility Message-ID: <005801c8731f$1d41efa0$e9d6010a@dtnspeed.net> Will spambayes run on Windows 98se with Outlook Express 6? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... See http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#does-spambayes-work-with-outlo ok-express. You've probably heard this a thousand times, but just in case you haven't: any machine running Windows 98 (or any other version for which security patches are no longer available) is in danger if it's connected in any way to another computer, even if it's only for e-mail. There are all sorts of ill-intentioned people out there who would love to exploit the security deficiencies of your computer to steal your passwords, credit card numbers, and anything else of value that is stored or entered on it. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Pam Taylor Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 12:45 PM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] Compatibility Will spambayes run on Windows 98se with Outlook Express 6? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The first is simply to keep training on the misclassified messages. Sooner or later, you'll probably accumulate enough cues that SpamBayes will classify the messages as you wish. The second is the first on steroids: discard your current training data and train from scratch. It sounds drastic, but SpamBayes is easy to train and learns quickly. You should be getting very good results by the time you've trained on a few dozen messages. A third possibility is to use the SpamBayes Manager to adjust the cutoff for possible spam. If SpamBayes is assigning the offending messages a spam probability close to but above the cutoff, you could adjust the cutoff upward slightly. For example, if SpamBayes typically assigns the messages an 18% spam probability and the possible spam cutoff is 15%, you could adjust the cutoff to 20%. The down side to this approach is that it will affect all messages, and it's possible that you'll get more spam in your inbox. And finally, there's the option of setting up an Outlook rule to move messages from that particular sender to some "safe haven" folder (that is, a folder that SpamBayes is not filtering). SpamBayes attempts to process messages after any Outlook rules have run, so you should be able to squirrel these messages away before SpamBayes classifies them. This is potentially labor-intensive and fragile, and it's somewhat at odds with the good work that SpamBayes is trying to do for you, so I'd make this a last resort. If you find a solution that works for you, it would be a kindness to reply to the list so that your solution will be part of the searchable mailing list archive for future reference. ________________________________ From: spambayes-bounces at python.org [mailto:spambayes-bounces at python.org] On Behalf Of Ted Ressler Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2008 9:04 AM To: spambayes at python.org Subject: [Spambayes] unmarking spam I am using the latest version of spambayes on windows xp. Although I saw some improvement, it was certainly not back to normal. The buttons worked for a few days, and then stopped working again. But this past weekend it really "lost it". Mail which always goes directly into my Inbox, now went in to Junk Suspects, or even into Junk Mail. The amount of mail which now goes into my Junk Suspects has increased three-fold. So... 1. it is scoring, but not doing it well. 2. the buttons are not working As requested, I have attached a log file. xxxxx has been used to replace username. Perhaps I should not be asking this but: any idea when these issues will be resolved? If you expect it will take months (which I respect) the wiser thing to do may be to uninstall it and just use the built-in spamfilter from Outlook for the time being. With my version of Outlook, the safe senders list is an Outlook function and not a Spambayes function. When you add a person to the safe senders list, that tells Outlook the sender is safe. That does not tell Spambayes anything. Only when you "Recover" an email are you telling Spambayes this is a good email. Keep doing the Recover and Spambayes will learn.
